Place: Quilted Works Retreat Center

January 2021
We had a great meeting to kick off the new year! Lots of exciting plans!
Here is a recap for those in attendance and to catch up those that missed out..
- Sew Days are held the 3rd Saturday of each month @10:00am at Scrap Apple Retreat Room, from 10:00am – 6:00pm.
- UFO Challenge will be an exciting, year-long event in coordination with American Patchwork & Quilting. Check it out HERE. Remember to use #APQResolution when posting. January is #7, bring your UFO to Saturday Sew and share progress in our private FaceBook group.
- BOM Lotto is a new and exciting way for everyone to participate in Block of the Month (BOM)… plus, a chance to win! Each month a block pattern will be presented at the meeting. Go home, make a block or many blocks, more blocks equals more chances to win! You will receive a raffle ticket for each block you make. All of the blocks will be collected. The winner will take home all the blocks or if we have enough blocks to make multiple quilts, there will be two or more winners! Jen Glathar presented the 12″ Heart Quilt Block at this month’s meeting, pattern attached. We are making this block using a navy, coral, teal, & white color way. This can be done with solids or tonal/blenders fabrics in the same colors. Watch for an example pic to be posted on our IG or FB page.
- Member Spotlight is your chance to shine! We would love to get to know you and learn about your way of quilting, how you became a quilter, or a specific quilt style or sewing technique that you have honed in on. If you are interested in telling the guild more about you and giving us a trunk show of your personal collection.
- Sew n’ Tell is always inspiring and this month there was plenty… check it out on Facebook & Instagram!
- Mark Your Calendar
- Natalia Bonner– Piece n’ Quilt Presentation & Trunk Show @ February’s Meeting, Thursday 2/11
- RRMQG Retreats – May 14-15 & October 15-16
Witches Night Out
Knot + Thread
What a treat to have Kaitlyn Howell from Knot+Thread as a guest at our guild meeting. Many of us have known Kaitlyn since she started working at Quilted Works while she was still in high school. It has been amazing to see all she has accomplished in the quilting world, as well as personally. We LOVE Kaitlyn (her quilting and patterns too!)
Modern Collage
Modern Collage Quilt Workshop & Trunk Show
with Effie Lasher
What a fun and creative process learning how to make this cute Teeny Tiny Sewing Machine Collage Quilt using the method from Laura Heine of Fiberworks. This mini quilt finishes at 16″ x 20″ and is the perfect size to start with to learn this technique. Here are just a few finishes from our class. Love how individual personalities and styles are displayed.
VA Home Charity Quilts
The Red Rock Modern Quilt Guild chose to make quilts for the Southern Utah Veteran’s Home in Ivins, UT. Members of the guild donated Red, White, & Blue fabrics to make Americana themed quilts for the beds of the Veterans and spouses of Veterans who reside in this facility. We presented the quilts to the VA Home on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2019. This is just a small token of appreciation for their service and sacrifice for our country. To our men and women in uniform, past, present, and future, THANK YOU ALL!
It’s Sew Shannon WAS HERE!
Last Saturday we had SEW much FUN with Shannon White (@itssewshannon). We made the Be Mine Pouch from Tickle Grass Designs. This bag uses Easy Piecing Grid from Ten Sisters Quilts and comes together perfectly… even with a zipper! It was SEW satisfying to make and finish a bag in just a few hours.
We ended the day with Shannon’s Trunk Show. This was a fun walk down memory lane. She showed us and told us the story of each of her quilts… not all of her quilts, but many! Her husband Stuart helped haul the quilts and complimented the show with his own heartfelt story about his grandmother’s quilts.
Thanks Shannon for a great day!
What’s Happening with the RRMQG?
It has been awhile since we’ve posted on the website… here’s what’s happening with the RRMQG…
- Queen Bee – this year we started a new tradition where each month a member (The Queen Bee) selects & presents a quilt block, then all of the participants make them that quilt block and present it to them the following month. It has been lots of fun and we have made some great modern twist on traditional and novelty blocks!
- Tip & Technique – every month we have a member present a tip or technique. So far we have learned a lot! This is a very talented group with a variety of knowledge, style, skill, and background. It is fabulous!
- Saturday Sew – we are now having Saturday Sew (nearly) every month! (except July & December) This event is held at Scrap Apple Quilts Retreat Room on the 3rd Saturday of the month.
- Scrap Challenge – we are currently in the process of making our Scrap Challenge quilts- using scrap fabric or stash to make scrappy quilts which are DUE and will be shown at the June RRMQG meeting.
- 20% Discount – members receive a 20% discount at Quilted Works the evening of the meeting (2nd Thursday) & at Scrap Apple on Saturday Sew days!
- Website Changes – we have added a Calendar to the website to keep track of our events. There is also a new Meet Us page that will have pictures and contact information for members.
We are excited for these changes and our continued growth. Thank you for being a part of the RRMQG! If you aren’t a member… we would love for you to attend a meeting and check us out!
